Understanding Coach Handbag Practical Buying Advice

Coach in 2026: The Complete Guide to the Label

Only a handful of American fashion names are more familiar than Coach, and in 2026 its sales are rising strongly. The label got its start as a tiny leather workshop, turned into a handbag specialist and now offers clothing, footwear and accessories in stores worldwide. Across the decades, its guiding formula has remained constant: well-crafted leather goods priced lower than those of the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has defined that niche as accessible luxury, set apart from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.

The roots of Coach, who owns and runs it, the size of the business and what it sells are all set out in this guide. It also looks at the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet, a question that regularly creates confusion. The prices given are observed market prices rather than an official price list, and figures are dated to their sources.

From a Manhattan Leather Loft to an American Icon

The Coach story starts in 1941, when a small family-run leather workshop was established in Manhattan. Six craftspeople working in a loft on 34th Street produced wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods for men, in Coach’s own telling. Handbags followed later, and so did the Coach name, which dates to about 1960 or 1961. The original owners of the workshop were not Miles and Lillian Cahn, even though the couple is at times mistakenly described that way.

By around 1950, Miles was managing the factory, after joining the business alongside Lillian in 1946. In 1961 they acquired the business from the original owners and took control. Reportedly, it was Lillian Cahn who proposed adding women’s handbags, which went on to reshape the company. Miles Cahn is credited with creating glovetanned leather, a finish inspired by the way a worn baseball glove softens with use.

Bonnie Cashin at Coach

No other designer is more closely tied to early Coach than Bonnie Cashin, the first to serve as its lead designer. She was never a co-founder of Coach, and she is reported to have worked under contract rather than as an employee. Her coach leather bag start date is a slight puzzle, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. What is not in doubt is that she created designs for Coach until 1974.

The designer unveiled the brass turnlock closure in 1964, which, in Coach’s account, was based on the toggle on the top of her convertible. She is also credited with brighter colors, side pockets and coin-purse details, which lightened the brand’s look. Even today, the turnlock is still one of the most recognizable Coach details, and it can be seen on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

From Sara Lee to Tapestry: Ownership and Listings

Coach was bought by Sara Lee Corporation in July 1985. Coach’s initial public offering followed in October 2000, and Sara Lee is reported to have sold its remaining stake the following year. In 2001 Coach introduced its Signature collection with the «C» monogram, so the pattern is not a mid-century heritage motif but a relatively new addition. The listed company, Coach, Inc., became Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, with its stock ticker moving from COH to TPR.

The renaming applied only to the parent company; the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Coach, Inc. had acquired Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry offloaded the shoe label to Caleres in a deal that was finalized on 4 August 2025. As of 2026, Tapestry’s stable includes only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, and Coach is by far the bigger of the two.

The Blocked Capri Acquisition

Tapestry revealed on 10 August 2023 that it had agreed to buy Capri Holdings, owner of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. A legal challenge to the deal came from the Federal Trade Commission in April 2024, and the agency asked a federal court to block the acquisition with a preliminary injunction. The preliminary injunction the agency sought was approved on 24 October 2024 by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it barred the companies from closing while the challenge went on.

The court’s decision acknowledged that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, distinct from mass-market bags as well as from true luxury. Arguing that the legal process was unlikely to be resolved before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024. The acquisition was never finalized, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.

Who Is in Charge at Coach Today

At Tapestry, the parent company, the chief executive is Joanne Crevoiserat. The brand itself is led by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, having taken the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and become permanent in April 2021. The brand’s creative direction belongs to Stuart Vevers, whose appointment became public in June 2013.

Vevers continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026, after reportedly presenting his first Coach collection in February 2014. His path to Coach reportedly went through Mulberry and then Loewe, where he served as creative director. Under his direction, Coach has mined its archive, bringing back older designs and reworking vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. The Cunard Building in New York was the venue for his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.

Coach in Numbers

The best snapshot of Coach’s scale comes from Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year that ended 27 June 2026. The whole of Tapestry posted $8,004.2 million, with Coach’s net sales making up $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year. Coach, put simply, was responsible for approximately 86% of group sales.

Coach’s count of directly operated stores reached 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. The figure of about 1,299 stores that also circulates covers every Tapestry store instead of Coach alone. Tapestry further noted that the average unit retail price of Coach handbags grew at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. Tapestry has attributed that rise partially to less promotional activity.

Bags, Ready-to-Wear and Footwear: What Coach Makes

Handbags remain the heart of the business, and coach handbags today combine structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. The Tabby, based on a 1970s archive shape, launched in 2019; the Rogue debuted in 2016 and came back in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, arrived in August 2024. After being shown on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall went on sale in February 2025. At the upper end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was spotted at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, but the Kisslock Frame Bag, reported as the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. The Coach Originals line revives archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.

Ready-to-wear is now a significant part of the offer, and coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. The same show also included blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. Fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, and footwear also takes in sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. Beyond that, Coach runs Coach (Re)Loved, which launched in 2021 and reportedly covers trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, along with Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand introduced on 20 April 2023.

Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online

A full-price coach store stocks the current collections, and the largest flagships go by the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened its doors in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as slated for 2027. In London, the Coach House on Regent Street likewise opened in 2016, and in the UK Coach is also sold through Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis. Whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket, the full-price range is the place to discover the latest season.

Outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website make up Coach Outlet, Coach’s own official channel. A quote attributed to Coach’s head of investor relations in 2014 placed the share of outlet merchandise made for the outlet channel at around 85%, though the figure is dated, and Tapestry has since raised the idea of bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claims that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, outrun the public evidence. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet all have UK outlet stores. Shoppers searching for the brand sometimes enter «couch» or «cosch»; before buying, check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
